Emm Sharpe first became involved with the Deaf community in 1985 within the school environment supporting the classroom teachers and providing personal care and support for Deaf, autistic, and disabled young people. Whilst working in this sector she discovered the beauty of British Sign Language.

Since 1985 Emm has worked across a wide range of organisations in various positions as a key worker specialising in supporting Deaf people in sheltered accommodation, charitable organisations, education, HM prisons, healthcare and with family and individual 1 to 1 support.

Emm is active within the Deaf community and has been teaching adults and children in schools for many years. Along with an extensive range of qualifications she holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Deaf Studies and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) allowing her to develop a range of bespoke and tailored course across multiple industries.

Emm works within the UK providing consultancy services as well as offering commercial and private tuition with a focus on helping individuals, local services and businesses understand their obligations to the British Sign Language Bill 2022 and the Equality act of 2010.

In the last few years Emm has developed a range of courses that are designed to educate organisations on how to provide accessible and inclusive workplaces, adopting a D/deaf friendly environment, enabling staff and management to become Deaf Aware and are able to effectively communicate in BSL at a basic introductory level with their D/deaf employees and clients/customers.

With her expertise and commitment,  Emm remains loyal to her ambitions to provide excellence, passion and enjoyment at all levels of education, whether that be through commercial or mainstream teaching and she continues to support learners to gain an invaluable insight into the amazing language of British Sign Language, encompassing a solid grounding in the cultural aspects of the Deaf community at the integral start of their BSL journey.

About the deaf awareness course Emm supplies

Do I need previous experience of Sign Language to join your courses?

No not at all none of our courses need previous knowledge or experience!

What do I do at Study Sharpe?

I coordinate all the course preparation and content, the course and assessment admin and delivery/teaching of our courses. We strive for the ’personal touch’ in everything we do.

Do I have to join an accredited course or can I just learn for fun?

No of course not – you are welcome to sign up for any of our course and you can also join any of our accredited courses without having to commit to an assessment if you choose not to, however, you will not be able to claim a certificate at the end of the course if this is the case, although we can arrange for you to receive a certificate of attendance.

What is a Signature accredited course?

Signature are the largest awarding body for British Sign Language qualifications in the UK. At Study Sharpe we are a registered teaching centre for Signature which means we are permitted to deliver their courses to you.  

What type of courses are available at Study Sharpe for businesses?

There are a few different options:

  • A 2- 3 hour taster/workshop which can be tailored to meet your service needs and type of business. This might cover general Deaf Awareness strategies and some cultural background information or it might also contain some basic specific British Sign Language signs/phrases that your staff may wish to learn to enhance their work role or communication with Deaf members of the public or colleagues.
  • Short Signature accredited courses between 6 – 10 weeks in length which form the first unit of the full Level 1 British sign Language Award.

There are 3 options available:

Frontline Staff unit - Aimed at customer facing roles and anyone wishing to gain a basic understanding of the language and it’s culture.

Healthcare Staff unit - Aimed at healthcare staff  who are working in community centres, healthcare clinics, outreach services, GP practices or hospital.

Young People unit - Aimed primarily at school, college or university students wishing to gain some basic understanding of BSL with tailored vocabulary within educational settings.

  • A bespoke personalised half or one day workshop covering your choice of content, Sign Language vocabulary/phrases or a longer course if required.

Who will benefit from our courses?

Anyone! We cater for individuals who are already learning Level 1 BSL online or through another provider, who may be struggling to pass units or need some extra signing practice, we offer extra 1:1 tuition and advice.

We offer discounted introductory courses for families of deaf children.

We offer courses and options to support SME’s and larger businesses become Deaf Friendly, Deaf Aware, inclusive and accessible to Sign Language users, whether they are employees or service users/clients or customers.
