recognising that burnout is on the rise.

Now is the time to understand more about it - The BAC aims to educate employers & employees globally on the signs and stages of burnout, contribute to the prevention of burnout and create a international community that takes collective responsibility to support each other.

What are the Burnout Awareness Charter Commitments?

Leadership Signatory

The BAC requests that each organisation has a signatory from one or more individuals in senior leadership roles. These individuals should be advocates and engage and support burnout awareness with a statement of intent. The statement can be used in both yours and our social media and web communications.

Psychologically Safe Space for Employees

The BAC requires organisations to provide its employees with a psychologically safe space to discuss openly how they feel without fear of judgement, discrimination, criticism or harassment.

Take Ownership

The BAC has a fundamental belief that organisations should take ownership for making employees aware of how they can manage stress, what is burnout, the different stages of burnout and how to prevent burnout.

Designated Burnout Awareness Champion

The BAC asks organisations to have at least 1 Burnout Awareness Champion within the company. This person will be given resources from the BAC, will have access to 4 webinars each year and will contribute towards the communication and education of Burnout in the Workplace.

Visibility

The BAC requires organisations to regularly attend BAC events and engage with communications and networks throughout the year. A vital component and success factor for the programme is continuous knowledge building, sharing best practices and ideas, and to be highly visible in promoting positive action.

Annual Burnout Survey

The BAC highly recommends that organisations complete an annual Burnout Survey. This can support measuring employee perceptions and sentiments, and the progress being made to support, recognise and prevent burnout in the workplace.

Become a Founding Partner

A Founding Partner is a company that will ultimately help with raising the awareness of the Burnout Awareness Charter.

We ask our founding members to:

Be Proactive. Proactively promote our Charter objective to help companies and their employees understand and prevent burnout.

Be Visible. Have at least one person present at the B.A.C. quarterly meetings

Be Impactful. Contribute ideas to ensure the Charter is making an impact

Be Present. Collaborate, engage and support the B.A.C. community - Burnout is on the rise and we, as a group, have an opportunity to make a difference.

Be Honest. What is working, what isn't working, what are we doing well, what could we be doing better or differently.

What is Burnout?

Burnout was originally coined in 1976 by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger. Dr Freudenberger’s biggest piece of work was looking at the treatment of stress, chronic fatigue and substance abuse.

The World Health Organisation made it a diagnosable syndrome in 2019 and since then it has become public knowledge and has become more of a “hot topic” since the 2020 pandemic.

Both Dr Freudenberger and the WHO have specified that burnout happens due to stress that is found in the workplace.

However, we have to be careful with that distinction as stress is prominent in many different areas in our lives.

BAC Charter FAQs

Not just another badge, the BAC is practical, proactive, and designed to complement your existing wellbeing initiatives.

What is the Burnout Awareness Charter (BAC)?

The BAC is a global initiative designed to help companies spot, understand, and prevent burnout before it becomes a crisis. By joining, you get access to training, resources, and a community that helps you create healthier, more resilient teams.

Why should my company sign up?

Burnout is one of the fastest-growing workplace challenges, affecting performance, retention, and wellbeing. The BAC gives you a practical, low-cost way to show commitment to tackling burnout and equips your managers and teams with the skills to respond proactively.

We already have Mental Health First Aiders. Why do we need this as well?

MHFA is a brilliant step, but it’s often reactive — supporting people once they’re already struggling. The Burnout Awareness Charter is proactive. It helps you recognise the early signs of stress, build psychologically safe teams, and prevent issues before they reach crisis point. Both complement each other, but BAC gives you the wider cultural framework.

Isn’t this just another badge?

We know the world doesn’t need another empty logo. That’s why the BAC combines visible commitment (certificate, badge) with practical training, assets, and community. You’re not just signing up to display a symbol, you’re equipping your teams with the knowledge and tools to make lasting change.

Will this create more work for us internally?

Not at all. We’ve built the Charter to be light-touch but impactful. Everything is ready-made: guides, posters, templates, training webinars, and a structured Champion model. You can pick it up and use it straight away without heavy admin or programme design.

Our company already has wellbeing initiatives. How is this different?

The BAC isn’t designed to replace what you’re already doing. It’s a foundation that supports and strengthens existing wellbeing strategies. The focus is on burnout specifically, which is one of the most misunderstood but damaging issues in today’s workplace. Many organisations have great wellbeing offers, but miss burnout prevention, this fills that gap.

How much does it cost?

Sign up in 2025 and you’ll receive 12 months of free access. From 2026 onwards, membership will start from £399 per year, which includes training webinars, resources, and a certificate. Additional Champion places can be purchased at a small extra cost.

What do we get when we join?

- The Burnout Awareness Charter Guide
- A certificate and badge to show your commitment
- 4 expert-led webinars (delivered in cohorts across the year)
- Ready-made assets (press release templates, posters, social posts)
- Access to the Burnout Awareness Champion community
- Early access to tools, training, and events

Who delivers the training?

The BAC is delivered in partnership with Includability and international burnout expert Katie Maycock, who has worked with organisations worldwide to tackle stress and burnout.

How do the webinars work?

Webinars are grouped into three cohorts across the year. When your company joins, your Champions can register for the next available set of four sessions covering: spotting early signs, psychological safety, the cost of ignoring stress, and building sustainable, high-performing teams.

What is a Burnout Awareness Champion?

Each company can nominate up to two Champions to attend the training and access the community. Champions act as internal advocates, helping to embed awareness and good practice across your teams. Additional Champion places can be added at a low cost.

How is this different from other wellbeing schemes?

The BAC is global, practical, and simple. It isn’t about long, expensive programmes or making loose pledges. It gives you the basics done well – clear training, community, and assets you can use immediately. It also links into Includability’s and GYST's wider networks, so there’s ongoing support if you want to go further.

Is the Charter recognised?

Yes. Companies receive a certificate and badge that can be shared on your website, social media, and internal comms. It’s a visible way to demonstrate your commitment to tackling burnout and supporting employee wellbeing.

Do we need to be an Includability member to join?

No. Any organisation can sign up to the Burnout Awareness Charter. However, BAC members also have the option to explore Includability’s wider services, including Committed Employer Verification and community events.

What happens after the first free year?

In 2026, we’ll offer you the chance to continue your membership for an annual subscription (£399 pa). By then, your Champions will have completed their first years training and you’ll have access to the full toolkit, so renewing should be an easy decision.

How do we sign up?

Simply complete the sign-up form on burnoutawarenesscharter.com. You’ll get a welcome pack, access details for your Champions, and an invitation to your cohort’s training sessions.
