June 26 Community Support Group Catch Up
Three speakers from elite sport, a global B Corp and the world of high performance coaching on what it really takes to perform well and look after people.
This month's Community Support Group brought together three people who work where performance and wellbeing meet, and who've learned what holds up under real pressure.
Leisha Harrell, Health and Wellbeing Lead at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, walked us through three years of building a wellbeing strategy from scratch in a role that never existed before. Mental health first aiders with a confidential reporting route, a healthcare cash plan for staff who didn't qualify for private cover, financial wellbeing workshops, and an EAP extended to the club's 4,000 casual staff. Her Lunch and Learns work because they put real people and real stories in the room, from cancer awareness sessions to speakers on addiction and recovery.
Elizabeth Cann, former England No.1 badminton player and now a high performance coach, made the case that identity is the missing piece in performance. We perform not to our level of ability but to who we believe ourselves to be. Her VAIL framework, vision, awareness, language and embodiment, gives people a way to close the gap between capability and what they actually produce, one small piece of evidence at a time.
Sophie Springgay, Culture and Engagement Lead at Danone, showed how a certified B Corp uses diversity data properly. Rather than only checking who comes in at the end of the recruitment funnel, Danone now tracks every stage to find where candidates drop off and why, then acts on it, from changing an assessment supplier to upskilling hiring managers. She was refreshingly honest about the lessons too: keep your Self-ID questions consistent, give people clear definitions, and accept that robust data takes time.
The through-line was simple. Performance and wellbeing aren't a trade-off. Get the wellbeing, the mindset and the data right, and performance follows.

Our next Community Support Group is Wednesday 29th July at 10:30am, the last before our August break, with four more speakers: Tanya Popeau, Head of Global Sustainability at PCMA; Joanna Griffin, Head of People at American Golf; Kim Deverall-Lunn, Senior People and Culture Manager at Pip and Nut; and Emily Sivey, Head of People at PayCaptain.
