Inclusion impact assessments: how to check policies, projects and events before they launch
Every new policy, project or event affects people differently. The Creating Inclusion Assessments module gives you a step-by-step way to check who might be helped or held back before you launch, and keeps the evidence ready for an equity audit.

A practical guide to inclusion impact assessments for policies, projects and events

An inclusion impact assessment checks a policy, project or event before it launches, to see who it might help, who it might hold back and what you can change. It is close to the equality impact assessment many UK organisations already know, extended to look at Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as a whole.
The Creating Inclusion Assessments module of the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit gives you a template and guidance to run one, and keeps your evidence ready for an equity audit.
Why do good decisions still leave people out?
Most decisions are made with the majority in mind. A new shift pattern, an office move, a reward scheme or a team event can all work well for most people and badly for a few, and the few are often the people least likely to be asked.
Without a consistent check, whether anyone thinks about this depends on who is in the room.
For B Corps, B Lab Standards V2 includes an equity audit among the actions in the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic, and a record of how you assess decisions is part of that picture.
What happens when nobody checks the impact?
Problems show up after launch, when they are harder and more expensive to fix.
The people affected feel the organisation did not think about them, even when that was never the intention.
And when someone asks how a decision was made, there is no record of the risks you considered or who you consulted.
What does the Creating Inclusion Assessments module help you with?
Creating Inclusion Assessments gives you a way to assess policies, projects and events, with your evidence ready for an equity audit. It takes you through who is affected, the evidence you have, the likely impact, the risks, who to consult and how to sign it off.
It is easy to follow, concise and structured, whether you are doing the work or reporting on it to your teams, groups or board.
What do you get?
↳ A guide to creating inclusion assessments
↳ The Inclusion Assessment Template, covering Start here, Overview, Characteristics and evidence, The four domains with ratings, Risks, Consultation, Summary and approval, and Lists
↳ A user guide for the template
What will you end up with?
↳ A consistent way to assess any policy, project or event before it launches
↳ A record of who is affected, the evidence you used and the risks you found
↳ A consultation record showing who you asked
↳ A signed-off summary, with your evidence ready for an equity audit
Why does it work for any employer?
Every employer makes decisions that affect people differently. Checking first is good practice, it reduces the risk of unfair treatment, and it saves time and money on fixes later. The module works whether or not you are a B Corp.
The template walks you through each step, so anyone leading a change can run an assessment without being an expert.
How is it built around the B Corp standards?
Creating Inclusion Assessments supports JEDI2.e in the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic of B Lab Standards V2.
Each completed assessment records the evidence, risks, consultation and sign-off behind a decision. Every module in the toolkit names the criteria it supports and the evidence it produces.
B Lab certifies B Corps. Includability supports the work you supply as evidence.
Where does Creating Inclusion Assessments fit in the toolkit?
The JEDI Inclusion Toolkit follows four steps, in the order that suits you: find out where you stand, decide what to do, do the work, and show what changed. This module sits in the second step, deciding what to do, and you can use it every time a new decision comes along.
It pairs well with Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens for the policies you already have, and with Inclusive Communications and Accessible Events.

Questions people ask
What is an inclusion impact assessment?
A structured check of a policy, project or event before it launches. It looks at who is affected, what evidence you have, the likely impact on different groups, the risks, and what you will change as a result.
Is it the same as an equality impact assessment (EqIA)?
It is closely related. An EqIA focuses on equality and protected characteristics. An inclusion impact assessment uses the same structure and looks more widely at Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
When should we run an inclusion impact assessment?
Whenever you introduce or change a policy, launch a project or plan a significant event, and early enough that you can still change the plan.
What is an equity audit?
An equity audit looks at how fairly your organisation's systems and outcomes work for different groups. Completed inclusion impact assessments give you a ready record of how you have checked decisions along the way.
Do we need to be a B Corp to use it?
No. The toolkit is built on good practice first and works for any employer. B Corps get the JEDI criteria mapping on top.
Is the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit a certification?
No. Includability does not certify, accredit or verify anything. B Lab certifies B Corps, and the toolkit helps you do the work and gather the evidence.
