Inclusive leadership: how to build it into your leadership team and board
Inclusion rises or falls with the people at the top. The Inclusive Leadership module gives your leadership team and board clear roles, public commitments, a KPI scorecard and practical tools for everyday decisions, so inclusion is led, not just supported.

A practical guide to inclusive leadership for leadership teams and boards

Inclusive leadership means leaders who own inclusion: they set clear commitments, make fair decisions, run meetings where everyone can contribute, and hold themselves to account for progress. It is a set of practical habits, not a personality type.
The Inclusive Leadership module of the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit gives your leadership team and board the tools to build those habits and show the results.
Why does inclusion stall without leaders?
In many organisations, inclusion is passed to one person or a volunteer group. Leaders say they support it, but the decisions that shape people's working lives, on pay, promotion, workload and who gets heard, stay the same.
Often leaders want to do more but are not sure what is expected of them, or how to measure it.
For B Corps, B Lab Standards V2 includes actions on leadership commitment and capability within the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic.
What happens when leadership is missing?
Inclusion work loses momentum the moment it competes with anything else.
People watch what leaders do, not what they say. When the two do not match, trust goes.
And when the board asks how the organisation is doing on inclusion, nobody at the table owns the answer.
What does the Inclusive Leadership module help you with?
Inclusive Leadership gives you an inclusion maturity matrix, leadership commitments and board good practice. It covers three areas:
↳ Leadership Team Tools. Clear roles and responsibilities, a commitments statement and a KPI scorecard for your leadership team.
↳ Building Inclusive Cultures. Who owns what, the activities that build an inclusive culture, and a self-assessment of inclusive leadership traits.
↳ Practical Tools and Skills. Everyday tools for fairer decisions and more inclusive meetings.
It is easy to follow, concise and structured, whether you are doing the work or reporting on it to your teams, groups or board.
What do you get?
↳ A guide, Leadership Team Tools, with a template: Roles and responsibilities, Commitments statement and KPI scorecard
↳ A guide, Building Inclusive Cultures, with a template: Ownership check, Activity planner and Traits self-assessment, plus a slide deck

Why does it work for any employer?
Every organisation needs leaders who make fair decisions and bring the best out of everyone. The module is built on good practice first and works for any leadership team, whatever your size or sector.
The slide decks make it easy to run sessions with your leadership team or board, and the tools fit into the meetings and decisions you already have.
How is it built around the B Corp standards?
Inclusive Leadership supports JEDI2.a and JEDI2.b in the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic of B Lab Standards V2.
Your commitments statement, roles and responsibilities, KPI scorecard and decision records show how your leaders own inclusion. Every module in the toolkit names the criteria it supports and the evidence it produces.
B Lab certifies B Corps. Includability supports the work you supply as evidence.
Where does Inclusive Leadership fit in the toolkit?
The JEDI Inclusion Toolkit follows four steps, in the order that suits you: find out where you stand, decide what to do, do the work, and show what changed. Inclusive Leadership sits in the third step, doing the work.
It pairs well with Supporting Learning Management, which tracks leadership training, and with Creating and Implementing a JEDI Action Plan, where leaders take ownership of the actions.

Questions people ask
What is inclusive leadership?
Inclusive leadership is leading in a way that gives everyone a fair chance to contribute and progress. In practice, it shows up in clear commitments, fair decisions, inclusive meetings and leaders holding themselves to account.
What are the traits of an inclusive leader?
Inclusive leaders listen widely, check their own assumptions, share credit, make decisions transparently and act on what they hear. The module's traits self-assessment helps leaders see where they are strong and where to grow.
What is the board's role in inclusion?
The board sets direction, holds leaders to account and checks progress. The module sets out board good practice, with roles, commitments and a KPI scorecard the board can review.
Is this inclusive leadership training?
It is a self-paced toolkit rather than a taught course. Leaders work through the guidance and tools, and the slide decks let you run your own sessions with your leadership team or board.
Do we need to be a B Corp to use it?
No. The toolkit is built on good practice first and works for any employer. B Corps get the JEDI criteria mapping on top.
Is the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit a certification?
No. Includability does not certify, accredit or verify anything. B Lab certifies B Corps, and the toolkit helps you do the work and gather the evidence.
