Inclusive policy review: how to check your policies with a JEDI lens
Policies shape how people are treated every day, often in ways nobody intended. The Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens module gives you a policy review process and a record of what changed, so your policies work for everyone they cover.

A practical guide to reviewing HR and workplace policies for inclusion

An inclusive policy review checks each of your policies for the people it might leave out or treat unfairly, then records what you changed. Reviewing with a JEDI lens means looking at Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in every policy, not only the ones with diversity in the title.
The Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens module of the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit gives you a process to do that, and a record that shows the work.
Why do policies fall behind?
Most policies were written for a reason, at a point in time, by someone who has since moved on. They get updated when the law changes, but rarely looked at for who they work for and who they do not.
A leave policy assumes one kind of family. A dress code does not allow for religious dress. An absence policy treats every absence the same, whatever the cause. None of it was meant to exclude anyone.
For B Corps, reviewing and updating policies through a JEDI lens is one of the actions in the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic of B Lab Standards V2.
What happens when policies are never reviewed?
People find out the policy does not fit them at the worst possible moment: when they are ill, grieving or starting a family.
Managers fill the gaps with their own judgement, so people in the same situation are treated differently.
And when someone asks what you have done to make your policies fairer, there is nothing written down to show them.
What does the Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens module help you with?
Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens gives you a policy review process and a record of what changed. It helps you see your whole policy suite at once, decide which policies to review first, and review each one in a consistent way.
It is easy to follow, concise and structured, whether you are doing the work or reporting on it to your teams, groups or board.
What do you get?
↳ A guide to reviewing and updating policies with a JEDI lens

Why does it work for any employer?
Every employer has policies, and every policy affects people differently. Reviewing them with a JEDI lens is good practice whether or not you are a B Corp, and it reduces the risk of unfair treatment.
The module is self-paced, so you can review a few policies at a time and fit it into your busy day.
How is it built around the B Corp standards?
Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens supports JEDI2.c in the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Topic of B Lab Standards V2.
Your audit grid and policy review record show which policies you reviewed, what you found and what you changed. Every module in the toolkit names the criteria it supports and the evidence it produces.
B Lab certifies B Corps. Includability supports the work you supply as evidence.
Where does Reviewing and Updating Policies With a JEDI Lens fit in the toolkit?
The JEDI Inclusion Toolkit follows four steps, in the order that suits you: find out where you stand, decide what to do, do the work, and show what changed. This module sits in the third step, doing the work.
It pairs well with Creating Inclusion Assessments, which gives you a structured way to assess new policies before they launch, and with Inclusive Communications and Accessible Events.

Questions people ask
What does reviewing a policy with a JEDI lens mean?
It means checking each policy for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: who it might leave out, who it might treat unfairly, and what would make it work for more people. Then you record what you changed.
Which policies should we review first?
Start with the policies that affect people most often or at the hardest moments, such as recruitment, leave, absence, flexible working and grievance. The audit grid helps you set the order.
How often should HR policies be reviewed for inclusion?
Set a regular cycle for every policy, and review sooner when the law changes, your workforce changes or feedback shows a problem. The audit grid keeps track of when each one is due.
Is an EDI policy enough on its own?
No. A diversity and inclusion policy sets out intent, but the policies people use every day decide how they are treated. That is why the whole policy suite needs reviewing.
Do we need to be a B Corp to use it?
No. The toolkit is built on good practice first and works for any employer. B Corps get the JEDI criteria mapping on top.
Is the JEDI Inclusion Toolkit a certification?
No. Includability does not certify, accredit or verify anything. B Lab certifies B Corps, and the toolkit helps you do the work and gather the evidence.
